to women

it is an international women`s day today, and i thought of writing a proper post about it, just like i did last year, but i have been at paris fashion week for a week now and have not been able to make the time to do it. this is why i am going to be extremely short! women, this is your day, just like any other. i hope that today you are going to get inspired, motivated and empowered by other women! i hope that you let yourself be yourself and do not let anyone tell you or make you believe that you should be anything else. women are incredible creatures, and i am thrilled ot be one of you! we can make wonders, so let`s continue doing so, shall we?

oh, and by the way...

cool things and great information keep on being posted here, and even though i am not in the us, i appreciate this organization a lot! also, i am wearing red today. what about you?

inspired by the women`s march

i rarely talk about politics here, but sometimes i do, because it is important. we must be aware of what is going on in the world we live in, we must remember that being active is important. there is no way you would be able to protect yourself, if you had no idea what rights you have as well as how to protect them. being open-minded, eager to learn and to explore, as well as ready to discuss the existing issues out loud is as important today as ever. i could not stand reading the news on the twentieth of january, because you-know-who became the president of the united states. i am among those who cannot believe that this is for real, that this could actually happen, but it did. this is the reality today. so, i ignored the news as much as i could on friday, but i could not stop refreshing my feed the next day, when the women`s march took place. actually, it would be more correct to say "women`s marches", because there were more than six hundred marches all around the world on all (!) continents. can you even imagine it? fantastic!!! this is exactly what i would like to discuss today, because it was an incredible day and there is a lot of work to be done!

celebrating women

o-o-oh my! i was on a subway train yesterday in the morning and opened twitter to find out about #LEMONADE - a visual album by beyonce, which does not really need a presentation, as you have already listened to it, i am sure. i had to listen to it, i had to see it, i had to experience it myself. the day in my thoughts was all about it. in the evening i watched it and emotions overflowed me. this is art - raw and real, real and raw. fascinating, spectacular, unforgettable. for me, as a person, for whom "words are essential" every single word on that album is as valuable as a song or a whole album itself. watching the album is so much more than just listening to the songs separately. everything you see, everything you hear is genial.

what i love about beyonce, and there is not doubt that i am not alone here, is that she celebrates women; she reminds you about the power you have and gently pushes you to celebrate yo-self. i love it, i admire it. you listen to a song and you are as excited to be a woman as one could be. you are happy and proud. you are bold. there are three phases of thinking afterwards: i am powerful, i can do anything > uhm, yeah, maybe, but i won`t be ever like her > wait, this is not what she wants me to feel like, this is not what she thinks herself. she is sure that she is number one (despite all insecurities and reasons that may appear worthy to see yourself as worthless) and she works hard as hell to be as good as one could only be. this is exactly what she wants me to do too. she wants to empower me, she shares her experience and knowledge with me to make me realize we are all in the same position, so it depends on us only what happens next.

i knew right away i had to write about it, then i had doubts - everyone would too and i did not want to do what the rest was doing. however, the more i listened, the clearer it became that i could not ignore it, i could not just enjoy the album. i had to write about it. i had to once again point out how powerful and strong women are (love is what makes us so), how proud i am to be one of them. i have felt this way since ten or eleven years old when i read "gone with the wind", saw scarlett o`hara as my role model and decided that i wanted to be just like her - i wanted to cope with whatever i had to, i wanted to manage it all despite all the challenges and pain. the older i get, the more i see that women are magical creatures, they are capable of things impossible for men and not only in a big picture kind of thing, on a daily basis too. however some struggle more than others, for some it is harder to find a voice and power inside, some need extra help and nurturing. this is what all of us are here for - to support and inspire each other. this is exactly what beyonce is doing, and i am grateful for it, just like hundreds of thousands of women around the world are. we are lucky to have her, we are lucky to have each other and we are lucky to have ourselves. we are lucky to be women and we should make the best out of it. let`s celebrate women, let`s celebrate each and one of us.

imma keep on runnin`cause a winner don`t quit on themselves, - let this be the motto of your life, girl.

on international women`s day

"you are a bit too late", - you might think, but actually i am not. i could have written this post before the eighth of march, but then i decided to have a look at what will be happening online on the day itself and talk about it all afterwards. i must say there is a lot to discuss.

i would like to start by saying that this day is seen in a very different way abroad and in the country, where i come from - ukraine. this is essential to understand. what do i mean? in ukraine and every other post-soviet country, the eighth of march is women`s day, but in a way that people all over the world celebrate mother`s day. although we congratulate and buy flowers to not only our mothers, but, in most cases, all women, including our teachers at school etc. it is a tradition, and even a day off. from my point of view, it is great that we do it for many reasons, but there is one major thing, that we are missing out. and that is a history of this day.

on the other hand, there is the rest of the world. i do not know much about the situation in every country, in particular, but what i can see online this day is not that big worldwide. however, this year was different and i am sure it will keep on getting more and more attention, as women become stronger fighters for their rights every single day and they realize that every chance to talk about existing issues is worthy.

as i have previously mentioned, most people have no idea what international women`s day is. i heard and read quite a few answers from ordinary people on the streets sharing their versions, including "it`s a day of celebrating spring", "it`s a day of celebrating nature and its beauty, as well as women", "i have no idea", "uu-u-hm, well, there was that woman who came up with this idea and it is what it is", "i know an answer to that question, but what about you?' etc. they are hilarious in their absurdity, but also upsetting. the fact is that people are not educated well, they are quite narrow-minded and they do not do anything about it. even those who consider themselves intelligent do not know much about the eighth of march. and it is a shame!

so this is the exact reason why i wanted to write this post, i wanted to talk about the lack of knowledge we have today and an urgent necessity to do something about it, to tackle this problem. everything started in 1857, when garment workers marched on the streets of new york to fight for equal rights with men and demanded improvements in working conditions. in 1910 klara zetkin, who was a well-known fighter for women`s rights, suggested to make this day the one to commemorate women`s fight for equal rights and seven years later the date stuck. so many years later we are still struggling with an issue of the lack of equality - women still get less opportunities, smaller salaries and more prejudice than men. so why are we not talking about it more? or even better, why are we not doing something?

i have met quite a few men, who said "if we are supposed to celebrate women`s day, where is men`s day?". to say that i was outraged to hear it is to make a very strong understatement. men have always been the rulers of the world, they have always been the one making decisions and being celebrated for whatever they do. what about women? they have always been there too. they have always supported men and have always taken care of them, as well as wanted to have a life of their own. think of viriginia woolf, simone de beauvoir and an endless list of those, whose names we do not know. a good example of an eternity between a man and a woman in history is shown in a movie "sufragette". there is a married couple, both husband and wife who work hard to make a living, BUT he works less hours than she does, receives more money than she does and gets to say "i am the one who decides what you do, because you are my wife". read this sentence again and again and again. now tell me how can this be seen as normal, adequate, logic? it cannot, because it is not. and this is what an international women`s day is about or, at least, must be.

knowledge - is power. the more intelligent you are, the more skills you have to achieve some outstanding results. and this is why we need to talk about it. while i was growing up, no one ever discussed it around me. no one brought this topic up. at school we celebrated the eighth of march every single year as a "women`s day" - we bought flowers for our teachers, we sang and we danced for them, as well as recited poems, which usually were about women`s beauty, but we have never talked about women`s rights movement. not one single person has ever brought this subject up. as i type this, i am astonished.

how do i end this? how do i sum this up? i would like to point out that we need to read more proper information, we need to know our history better, we need to train our brains. and when i say "we" i do not only mean women, i mean men too. i thank every single man from the depth of my heart for buying flowers and/or presents for his girlfriend/wife/sister/mother/grandmother, but i want to ask him to realize and always remember that every woman is equal to him, that she deserves his respect and that she does not owe him any-thing. she does not! no one does. he does not owe her anything either, by the way. this is what feminism is about, this is what equality is about - same rights, same positions, same opportunities. i respect you and you respect me, but this will only happen, if we start this conversation, if we educate ourselves and those around us, if we talk about it with girls and boys from a young age, and if we use a day like the eighth of march to pay tribute to all the women who have been strong throughout these years, who have fought for our rights, who have helped us without even knowing it to lead a life, like we do today. i admire them and i am grateful, and i do not want to forget what they have done. i want to celebrate them and i want to celebrate every living woman on earth. i am proud to be a woman and i will always care. hopefully so will you!
